@eigenrobot Yeah I think anyone who is actually excited about what's going to happen next (or has a likely outcome they think will be Actually An Improvement) is living in a very tiny reality bubble. Like in some sense an improvement to have Trump out, but overall trajectory still 📉⤵️
@eigenrobot By "likely" here I mean something like "one of Biden/Trump get elected", which are both in some sense likely. Some substantial contesting of results also likely. 3rd party candidates not likely magical restoration of sane democracy & discourse not likely

@alt_visa Yeah. I'm feeling into how to do this, and I think the kind of thing I'm gesturing at in this thread represents a kind of prototype both of how *I* can do this, and how others can. (Which is the nature of how I think: with an eye for generality.)

hot take re complaining: it is how people affirm their values and the reality & legitimacy of their own experience
if someone is complaining, the best way you can care for them and for the overall situation is to find a way to dignify and support and welcome their values & experience, while not making anybody wrong (applies to self too, if you notice urge to complain)
turns out that once someone feels sufficiently authorized to have their own experience and values, they actually tend to have a fair bit of space to consider that the person they're frustrated with... has its own integrity!
although invariably almost everyone forgets that step 😂
But tbh probably they actually don't manage to reach the step where the person feels deeply authorized to have their own experience and values, and to trust and distrust who we trust and distrust
Years of institutionalized gaslighting are hard to unlearn. But possible! Emotional reconsolidation can actually do this and restore self-trust, in way less time than it took to undermine peoples' self-trust so hard in the first place.

Thread · Why "trad" can't escape choice
@Aella_Girl Part of the issue with trad is that it's almost completely arbitrary but pretends (incl to itself) that it's not and is actually fixed and known and involves no choices. 1950s are one image, but modernity isn't trad. Victorian era is another image, but it ain't trad either.
@Aella_Girl <Whatever my parents are doing (or thought they were doing)> is also a common image. Same with most of what we think we know about huntergatherer cultures. Etc etc etc.
@Aella_Girl Lots of inspirations, but you nonetheless have to choose. Can't go back to choiceless society, which is the main thing that all of these images of trad have in common! There is no default culture, in the same way there is no person who doesn't have an accent when they speak.

@RealMackenzieL And then everything people try to teach you in school, assess both the content of it as well as the actual pedagogy being applied. Find contradictions. Ask "how would I design this better?" Try to teach people. Learn from them what does & doesn't work, and how to iterate.
@AbstractFairy > (you're an excellent writer, so this is probably on me) Nah, communication is never only one person's responsibility! 💞🙂
@AbstractFairy So I'm very with you re commiserating. Literally "misery together". Doesn't help. But deeper under every complaint is something that's very *important* to someone. It might be something that consciously they can't even name. It also might be too big and obvious, like DIGNITY.
@AbstractFairy To take a dignity example, consider someone complaining about their experience of being given the runaround by a bureaucracy. Part of what they're asserting is "this is demeaning. I am a person worthy of respect, and I know what it would mean to be respected and that was not it."
@AbstractFairy And if you can find that level in the person's complaint, then separate from trying to solve it and separate from going into misery energy, there's a possibility to say (emotionally, maybe not these words) "Yes. You matter. Nobody deserves that fuckery, as common as it is."
@AbstractFairy Does that make sense? I'm valuing your question in helping me find another way to articulate this! It's a very new idea for me—previously I would have said that my perspective on complaint was very similar to yours.

@startuployalist Exactly! And as you can tell by the meta-vision thread above, I'm very into honoring the unique magic of each individual :)
@andy_matuschak Mmm, yeah. Great question and not one I have a simple answer to. On the deepest level, I'd posit this is usually at least in part an indication of some lack of integration: - I enjoy X - I should X - I don't want to do what I should! - I don't do X
@andy_matuschak Another big piece is something more about mood/mode switching and inertia, where like, your system has a hard time imagining what it'll feel like to be in a completely different mode, so if you imagine doing something that's incompatible with the mode you're in, it feels ughy.
@andy_matuschak 3rd piece: something around flow when you first start something, even getting yourself in the groove might be hard, whether: learning a new skill → familiarity creates comfort starting a project ex nihilo → increased surface area means more options of what to work on
@andy_matuschak A bonus piece: sometimes I've found it quite motivating to think of my future self as someone I want to care for, and to do work in service of setting my future self up to do good work. Cleaning my room (& closing tabs) before a weekend of intensely focused coding, for instance.
@pjeby @xuenay @mattgoldenberg I think we have pretty different paradigms here. I think that software is an inadequate metaphor for the evolutionary process that happens in a brain, and that orienting to one's own thoughts as sacred is actually appropriate. They're not people, but they're not machines.
@pjeby @xuenay @mattgoldenberg Something doesn't need personhood to be possible to respect or disrespect. One can respect or disrespect a forest, for instance. Or a river. Or any ecosystem! A human mind is a memetic and semantic ecosystem, and one can have a basic regard of respect for its complexity.
@pjeby @xuenay @mattgoldenberg On a different level of abstraction, most of what's going on in the brain, information-theoretically, is (afaict) more analogous to ppl talking than to computer APIs. Bottom-up, emergent, distributed, parallel, redundant, perspectival, etc. Basic vibe can be argue or dialogue
@pjeby @xuenay @mattgoldenberg I think what @xuenay said is partly true but I actually am gonna bite that bullet he kindly tried to take out of my mouth 😆

Wtf is the biz model of those store plugins like @Klarna that let you pay in installments. Usually the way installments work, like a lease or buying a laptop that way is they cost more than original. But I've now seen multiple where it's identical. Guessing merchant gets less.

Like my guess is that the premise is that this thing increases the conversion rate enough that it's worth having smaller margins because you're selling more. Ah So instead of selling for $252, customer pays $63×4mo, and you get <$252, probably up front
Ah yep, from "Klarna for business": > You get paid right away, in full, while your customers get the option to pay later. Wait though, but "in full"? 🤨 But then how does Klarna make money? Ah, just 6% flat fee, maybe even *if* customer pays up front 😬
This is... better than App Store (30%). But usually for physical products, which have way tighter margins than software. Well, software doesn't have "margins" at all, since it's usually zero marginal cost. amzn.to/3jPct6t
Anyway, I haven't looked into it in depth but I have a hazy sense that Klarna will be bad for many businesses, in much the same way Groupon was.

Thread · A three-phase pathway into emotional reconsolidation · 5 of 6 tweets
I'm developing a new general integration pathway, based on this insight "unlearning trauma responses is allowed to be fun", and further implications. Curious to hear thoughts from @xuenay, @mattgoldenberg, @nosilverv, @pjeby, etc Short thread 🧵 1/5
What I'm about to say will make a lot more sense if you've read this summary of Unlocking the Emotional Brain, or something equivalent. lesswrong.com/posts/i9xyZBS3…
Phase 1: Get a taste of therapeutic reconsolidation: • start with something you feel motivated to change • use a technique you feel safe with / attracted to Outcome: feel a sense of the reality of emotional reconsolidation and of the limbic brain.
Phase 2: Cultivate & integrate active appetite to do more, both by finding other things that already feel juicy, and by prioritizing therapeutic reconsolidation on any resistance that comes up. Outcome: get buy-in from all of your parts to resolving differences via ~dialogue
Phase 3: Then with full-buy-in stance, go wild! Let yourself work on everything else as it arises. Give in to the urge to integrate. And maybe like me this prompts you to reach out to a therapist in a modality you feel excited about, or you get training in a technique. Whatever!
@quotidiania @xuenay @mattgoldenberg @nosilverv @pjeby BioEmotive / NEDERA is a really great self-applied technique because the energetic waves of emotion released have a kind of momentum to them so it's easy to not get stuck or bored or lost (compared to eg Focusing). Not for everybody though as quite intense.

Thread · Why policing "unnatural" behavior isn't a paradox · 7 of 8 tweets
There's an apparent paradox around the policing of sexual norms by saying "X is unnatural" because in some sense one might imagine that if it were unnatural then why would anyone want to do it and thus why would policing even be necessary?
Paradox goes away when you realize that while there are undeniably some biological urges, almost all of human behavior is profoundly meme-driven and memetic evolution outclasses biological evolution...
...so fitness of behavior can end up being more efficiently selected for on meme levels, which means the genes no longer select for those behaviors but rather for the ability to follow memes. And for memes' abilities to make people follow them.
Hence sexual policing of "unnatural behavior" is actually part of that process, not a contradiction to it, hence there's not actually a paradox here!

Thread · Self as a selfing function among parts
I have a take on this! "What is Self?" I think it's different from IFS but also compatible. Curious how it dovetails with all of @xuenay's sequences building up IFS from scratch (which I admit I have not thoroughly read) (IFS = Internal Family Systems)
What is Self? I like to think of it as a "selfing function". Since you only have one body and one mouth and one "attention" in some sense, *somehow* your system needs to answer the question of "what do I do, say, and think about or attend to?" Different parts generate candidates.
Different parts generate candidates, but something has to perform some sort of aggregation & selection function, and my take is that that *something* is not a "part" in the same sense as other brain modules being "parts". Maybe a different kind of part? Or maybe more emergent…🤔
Maybe I'm just literally defining "part" as the things that generate candidates and "selfing function" as the thing that selects. That seems about right, actually. Note: "self" in this sense is wider than IFS Self, in that something necessarily must always be performing this fn
However, it is common for it to be performing it quite poorly, which looks like stuckness or oscillation because conflicting urges are unable to be reconciled. Perceptual Control Theory describes these dynamics in depth.
One image I have found very evocative (tho way anthropomorphized) is of the Self sitting at a desk and getting constant inputs from parts, who are coming up and delivering verbal reports as well as folders of information and so on, and they're relating to these parts.
Common, dysfunctional Self is overwhelmed and feels victimized by parts. It expresses irritation at what seems to it like irrelevant or false information (eg coming from emotional flashbacks). A kind of "you should know better", but no adequate explanation of why.
Can also have Self that has an appreciative stance. Imagine them saying "yes, thank you", "great, I'll have a look", "oh, false alarm but thanks for letting me know". And if conflicting or surprising info, a curious orientation, assuming the confused part was missing vital info.
(Seems plausible to me that these two general approaches might correspond to left & right hemisphere somehow, although there's obviously way more going on than that. But frustration is very LH-characteristic, and RH is way better at holding conflicting perspectives comfily…🤔💭)
Another image I've had is of my Self being like a dad, & all of my thoughts being kind of like kids clamoring for attention… there's a sense of like, I can't read each kid's favorite story at the same time, but I *do* actually have enough *love* for all of my kids at once!
And importantly, I can communicate my limits/boundaries/choices/etc to my kids in a way that makes them feel bad for even asking for attention, or in a way that dignifies them and appreciates their desire & request. I've been learning to shift this in relation to my thoughts!
Same day I first realized this, I was musing under my breath about something, and my attention trailed off, and I was like "or whatever the hell I was talking about" then I was like "wait—no. NOT whatever the hell. that thought was sacred, even if I'm choosing not to explore it."
I've been talking about this stance with @pjeby lately and he thinks that this is absurd because the brain is software and not deserving of respect (nor disrespect), but I feel like I can now point more precisely at what I mean, here.
I don't know that much about machine learning, but I know a little. I also don't know that much about neuroscience & neurochemistry, but I know a little. It seems to me that the two stances above probably have a distinct neurochemical signature and the loving one learns better.
Without claiming much specifically, I would say that this almost certainly has something to do with serotonin, as evidenced by: • neuroplasticity anti-correlated with depression • REBUS model that talks about better brain communication on psychedelics (serotonin system)
What is serotonin's deal, anyway? These words I came up with as attempts to pithily evoke it sound suspiciously like the Core States one gets to in Core Transformation 🧐
The image QT'd just above talks about high serotonin as being "secure high status". I suspect <whatever that looks like for you> is the spacious & integrative IFS Self, more so than your preconception of what "talk to yourself lovingly" implies.
Okay, long enough thread for now! I've got an existential dance party to rock out at 💃🤸♂️ As always, it's important to remember that the desk & dad metaphors above aren't literally true, because of homunculus issues. But the thing they evoke seems central to what Self is, to me.

I'm reviewing the diff from their pull request and the changes were literally: - add <meta charset="utf-8"> - escape html insertion - add a couple things to manifest.json - upgrade angularjs version to latest basically it
@nosilverv @limitoftruth @mozillabuilders Not saying it'll be as simple for you—idk. But point is, don't assume it's difficult.
I'm only slightly surprised, but I am *disappointed* that when I search twitter for "election", almost nobody is talking about how few of the votes have been counted yet due to mail-in stuff. @FiveThirtyEight doing okay tho:
I had sorta thought of this (Thanks @ThreadHelper) a couple weeks ago but alas I do not have infinite reach.

@NateSilver538 *sigh* Nate fucked up a lil phrasing it as "a bit back to 50/50". Half the replies think he means "move it to 50/50" even though "a bit" clearly implies "towards 50/50" if you slow down to read. Something like "move it away from extremes" probably woulda worked way better.
@nathanbraun huh, yeah. given serious possibility of biden landslide based on polls, and that that's clearly not happening, makes sense it would drop surprised it hit 70% trump though given uncounted early ballots etc but I don't have skin in the game (betting-wise) here so 🤷♀️

Would be an interesting parallel in absurd extremism to when very liberal people/organizations who refuse to toe the wokeist line get branded by them as "right-wing". Haven't seen as much of that in the opposite direction, so far (but may have just missed it)

They all seem like worthwhile qualities! - liberal = live & let live - progressive = try to improve things - conservative = don't wreck shit while improving And as far as I can tell, the two US presidential candidates atm are not particularly outstanding on any of them 😕🤷♀️
Nothing's surprising at this point, but notice how Biden is not speaking whatsoever to the half of America who voted Trump. He could be addressing their concerns about fraud or stolen election, but he's pretending those concerns don't exist/matter.
I suspect at most 30% of Trump voters (maybe way fewer) would be able to usefully get anything out of him acknowledging those concerns—by which I don't mean any sort of concession about facts, just "I know some of you are concerned about voter fraud, and that's important." etc
My guess is that that 30% are relatively silent, so it's hard to imagine that they're out there—and that's if you're even trying to track what Trump supporters are saying at all. Is Biden? Does he realize he's running for president of *all* Americans, not just half? Unclear.
(Trump obviously in some sense actively doesn't, to be clear. And his base seems to have an almost sadistic energy about the idea of winning and getting to dominate the US with their policies, getting off on the idea that many people aren't going to like those policies.)
The growing loudness of the partisan political contest increasingly obscures the idea of democracy.
There are lots of issues to be fixed with this idea but I continue to think it's onto something really important about incentives. Probably too late for this to fix polarization though.
One fixing idea: succession to speaker 👇 (remember: in countries like the UK & Canada (where I live 🍁) the head of state is "the leader of whatever party got the most seats in parliament", so this actually falls back on a very well-tested system tbh.)

@VitalPixel Ofc not. Nothing, defined in its own terms, sounds that dumb. Steelmanned radicalism says something more like: "Things are so borked we have to tear them down and rebuild, even if things are lost in the process". And it has a point! But so does conservativism. & everything.
This is tough. Part of what makes the claim baseless is that he spent the whole election mostly ignoring half of the country's apparent concerns. Even if you think the concerns are unfounded due to propaganda, you can't dialogue from a place of "you're just confused.
@tnorthcutt @zarkonnen_com Exactly, yeah.
@CrayonsAndSuch @xuenay @zarkonnen_com Yeah, this ^ I mean a game that you play in real-time, but it's got huge info delays built in.

Whoa! Here's another neat version. Say you've got 4 players on 2 teams, and one person from each team is on Mars, the other on Earth. Kind of like one defender, one invader, on each team, and latency in communication between you and your ally as well as other delays.

Thread · The copywriting problem unique to meta offerings like courses and goal systems
Mmm, this is reminding me that there's a specific copywriting problem that's unique to meta offerings like this: > I'm building a small course to help you figure out what you truly want in life and how to get it. I've encountered the same thing with @CompliceGoals.
If you want to sell someone deodorant, the sales pitch is "our deodorant is better than the other one you're using". Maybe you say it's healthier or greener, maybe you say it'll get you laid. Whatever. There's some sort of selling point, and a comparison.
If you want to sell something that solves a problem people currently have no solution for, then you just need to identify their pain point in a way that makes them feel seen & heard, and then they'll assume you have the solution. (which may be naive 😆👇)
But if you want to sell "I have a device that solves your problems (or empowers you to)", which is what any system for productivity, personal development, life-clarification, goal-setting, etc, does… …well, what's the catch? *Obviously* everyone would want this, IF it works.
So you need to empower people to figure out (before purchasing) whether this is the sort of thing that might work for them. A free trial can be one way, and it's worked well for Complice because it gives people a firsthand taste of a different approach:
But a free trial doesn't work as well for a course, and in any case you need to help people self-identify whether they want to sign up or not. Not gonna pretend I have a proper taxonomy here, but approaches include: - say who's not a fit - present an archetype - vibe with people
complice.co has this quote on it, which is designed to emotionally evoke a meaning-oriented vibe in relation to productivity. It reminds you (gently) of the finiteness of life, and nudges you to consider that your existing approach might be out of touch with that.

To @Neats29 — since your course comes out of your own experience, what you probably want to do is tell the story of how you were stuck in unclarity about what you wanted, and see who resonates with that and who doesn't.
Was gonna say that the intended effect of that is "WHAT? I thought I was the only one!" but that's actually only true if you thought that about yourself too. Point is, inducing some quality of surprise & self-recognition with this story is desirable.
My suggestion would be to message a dozen friends directly and have a conversation with them where you find out if they would be a good fit for your course, not to sell them on it but to refine how you articulate the story to produce that recognition.
For more thoughts in this general area (including specifically re messaging friends) I have a blog post from a few years ago, that I would probably frame differently now but I expect to still be useful to people. malcolmocean.com/2016/09/awkwar…
The other half to the "what's the catch?" above is the question of whether your solution *does* actually solve their problem. Herein lies two reasons to work directly with at least a couple people: 1. to ensure that the thing *does actually work* 2. to get some testimonials
@Neats29 You have inspired a thread!

"You know, we honestly thought we would get more votes than we did. That tells us there's something we don't understand about the needs of all Americans. We're gonna listen closer." — not actually what anybody elected this week said but that would be a *real* step towards unity.
Thread · Why political unity talk fails without actually listening to dissenters · 7 of 12 tweets
Continuing to be 🤨 at politicians talking about unity but not actually addressing the people who voted against them. KH: > You delivered a clear message. You chose hope, and unity, decency, science, and yes—truth. "Clear message"—MAYBE if a landslide.
What would it be like for someone to stand up in a "1st speech as [vice] president-elect" & say "You know, we honestly thought we would get more votes than we did. That tells us there's something we don't understand about the needs of all Americans. We're gonna listen closer."
THEN talk of unity would be more than an ideal. (to be clear, I'm aware that most of the audience at this event *are* probably Biden+Harris voters. Doesn't matter. They're addressing the whole country, and the world (hi from 🇨🇦!) via this speech.)
KH: > "You chose Joe Biden as the next POTUS" This represents the American will as being already unified. It's exactly the sort of language that encourages compartmentalization in individuals, and I would expect it to encourage division in a nation as well.
It says "the will that spoke most vehemently won, and all dissenters can stuff it." A series of primary votes then a national election is an absurdly crude approximation of collective will. It's what we've got, but we don't have to pretend that it's actually good.
Timely quote from Churchill. Note that these don't strictly contradict. KH's quote doesn't portray US democracy as perfect. But it does portray it in a way that suggests people should feel satisfied with it, even if they don't.
I honestly don't expect most people to get this, because my understanding of it is only a few months old, and came out of a bunch of deep exploration into the nature of the psyche (Unlocking the Emotional Brain) and dialogue (On Dialogue by Bohm) and trust. Still articulating.

Dialogue requires acknowledging this: you don't know what you need to know in order to integrate with others—truly integrate, which means respecting their INTEGRITY. You have to listen.
Biden, ~21mins in the video: > Refusal of Ds & Rs to cooperate with each other is not some mysterious force beyond our control. It's a decision… if we can decide not to cooperate, we can decide to cooperate." I see it not as a decision but skills: listening & finding win-wins.
If you don't have those skills, then "deciding to cooperate" means "deciding to compromise" means "deciding to half give up". With those skills, you don't have to *decide* to cooperate. You just *do* because it *works better*. Win-wins are stable, rather than contested.
While writing this thread, I found myself imagining writing an alternate pair of speeches for Harris & Biden to deliver on this occasion. I think that would be a profound & challenging exercise for any aspiring memetic mediator.

Thread · Background intentions, relationship to goals, and the Goal-Crafting Intensive
Yup, sometimes you can put an intention in the background and your system will make it happen. That clarity makes a difference. Honestly sometimes *trying* to do something directly can generate resistance. All of that is stuff we talk about at these online workshops we run.
Tickets are now available for the upcoming Goal-Crafting Intensives, btw! 6 sessions around New Year's. Click this link to check it out, or keep reading this thread for more relevant thoughts. complice.co/event/plan2021…
Okay, other relevant thoughts. @ThreadHelper, help me out. Where's that thread where I talk about what happens when you remove key ingredients from a goal, like that cookie experiment someone did? Ah great, yup, here it is:

Now what about the thread about how naming goals is kind of like ritual magic? (@ThreadHelper isn't finding this one for me, but that's fine, I can search it. TH is still also magical.)
For anyone who's skeptical of the entire idea of goals, here's a long thread that thoroughly points out that basically all issues with goals are actually issues with one's *relationship* to goals, and probably exist towards your implicit goals anyway.
If the word "goal" doesn't work for you, no worries. It's just a pointer to whatever you deeply want. If you can get really clear on what you want, and let yourself do it, it can flow! And—that's not always easy. So you need approaches in the meantime.
Here's @m_ashcroft with a tweet and some discussion about how he prefers the word "intention" over "goal".
Here's a rave review from last year 🔥
The workshop isn't just a bunch of lecture content & exercise. It's got a little of those, but it's choose-your-own-adventure: work through at your own pace & talk with coaches to get unstuck or for general advice. Link for Dec & Jan events: complice.co/event/plan2021…
@m_ashcroft Muaha I actually used your tweet here as jumping off point for the first thread about the upcoming sessions!
@nosilverv brain hemispheres man I think it's possible to simultaneously have: • LH monomaniacally focused • RH infinite awareness The two have to share a body and in some senses "consciousness", but they can learn to synergize pretty damn effectively I think.
Thread · When unblending goes too far and internal parts get reified · 8 of 9 tweets
Very possible to take unblending too far & reify the parts. "Part", as @AskYatharth gets to lower down, is only useful as shorthand for acknowledging internal conflict: "Part of me wants X" is true of any want, but unless other parts *disagree*, we usually just say "I want X".
To take a trivial example, say that you have the following wants: A) go get a snack B) finish writing a tweet thread While conflicted: "part of me wants A, part of me wants B" But, if parts assent, can rearrange to "I want to A then B" or "I want to B then A".
Or maybe: "I want to both go get a snack and finish writing a tweet thread, but I think on net what I want to do is finish writing the thread and save room in my belly for dinner which is coming up" And lol if a part objects you will discover yourself doing something else 🤷♀️🙃
That bit is important! Very easy when approaching non-self-coercion to feel like you must force yourself not to force yourself to do things. My take: try saying "I choose X" [despite inner conflict] but if that doesn't work, then don't double down.
And, where possible, give yourself space to let the problem solve you, in the background, while lots of other things shake out.
Lol I'm just rambling at this point. Where did this thread start? Oh yeah, parts. Anyway, the experience of "parts" is because various systems are stuck in a traffic jam and not able to allow each other to give into their various temptations.
Consider the phrase "I allow myself to X". The shift that @AskYatharth is pointing at is from identifying with the "I" to the "myself". The feeling is an experience of "I'm free to do what I want!"
Recommended further reading… this chapter of The Guru Papers, which talks extensively about how people reify parts of themselves as good and parts as bad, and how the two rely on each other to justify their own existence & frame. docs.google.com/document/d/1HK…
@AskYatharth I know there's a icon now to see QTs, but I still feel like I want to comment here being like "I wrote a thread building on yours"
you're just trying to trick me into saying something clever, aren't you
Realization re Phase 2: reconsolidation usually involves feeling some sense of agency around destructive behaviors, and for many people these likely include stuff that mainstream society considers NOT OKAY to do on purpose. Gotta disown that culture.
There are a few different approaches to disowning the mainstream culture. Ultimately to some extent you need to have a sense of a nonjudgmental culture that other real people you know actually hold. Auxiliarily, can also try to cultivate your own vibe:
Tickets now available for our yearly Goal-Crafting Intensives, a unique online workshop that doesn't exhaust you with hours of zoom, but instead gives you space to work on sorting out your life, plus a private channel with coaches to get unstuck or advice! complice.co/event/plan2021…
@mattgoldenberg Yeah we might name the event and the concept of "goal" somewhat differently if we were inventing the event from scratch now, but it's hard to avoid these kinds of issues since people project their old ideas onto new things anyway.
@mattgoldenberg Another great example of that:
We said we were going to do this "for the time being". And we did. But the Time Being is a hungry god, and he demanded ever more sacrifice.
@ben_r_hoffman Whenever there's a loud sound I usually harmonize with it. Some machines have a nice hum, car alarms usually have a beep with a rhythm I can polyrhythm with. Sirens are harder but still doable. Haven't tried that with my worst enemy yet though: motorcycles & muscle cars 🤔

"The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way." — Marcus Aurelius This is one of my favorite quotes, and @mattgoldenberg's tweet below highlights what it means to me.

Applies with interpersonal relationships too, although there there's a whole deeper challenge—to affirm & honor others' needs & any distrust of you, without negating any of your own experience or self-trust or needs. Still: integrating obstacles to trust are how trust is built.
Sometimes I feel like if I never needed to eat or go to the bathroom, I would be so perfectly focused. But it occurs to me also that I would probably be *too* focused, like those patients with right hemisphere damage who forget for hours to look away from something eye-catching.
Vaguely thinking about twitter & timezones, and wondering how many people there are in the world who intentionally maintain a weird sleep schedule for the primary purpose of convincing someone (or everyone) that they're in a timezone they're not. A dozen? 100? 10k? Prolly rare.

Thread · Why I never finish the online courses I buy
The number of online courses I have signed up for & not actually completed is absurdly high. Especially self-paced ones but even like… I dropped out of @fortelabs' BASB halfway. Watched a lil of @nateliason Roam course. Early backer on @m_ashcroft's AT course, haven't touched.
Signed up for @mattgoldenberg's Procrastination Playbook bootcamp and didn't go to most of the sessions. He held a pretty good container for us exploring what schemas might have been active for me around "homework" & shoulds & stuff there though—kudos.
And that's far from a complete list. Part of this probably reflects not so much a lack of follow-through but an over-optimism about *buying* courses, only to discover that they don't really feel like they're addressing my real situation/bottleneck.
The only online course I can recall completing is @ribbonfarm Longform blogging course and I'm sure that was online possible because it was live & had an external deliverable. Felt less like a course and more like "onramp to RF guest post".
I want like... a thing where when I go on twitter, my feed randomly includes content from online courses I've signed up for, not just tweets. Why can't this content be folded into my natural dopamine hooks? Hmm...
I'm taking in a deeper layer of this experience of mine is a huge part of why the Goal-Crafting Intensives we host are structured the way they are: • a couple optional pre-event exercises • live 5h sessions w 10min vids, exercises & coaches complice.co/event/plan2021…
Even the pre-event exercises are quite compatible with people not doing it all at once but kind of opening it up periodically randomly. 💭 Dream List benefits from background rumination & reverie. 📅 Time Audit benefits from logging over the course of a week.
@AskYatharth can your co-lifing concept create an ongoing platform that gets people doing courses together? Maybe even different courses, just like, showing up to learn together! Or maybe a Complice coworking room explicitly for working MOOCs & other online courses… hmm 🤔

@AskYatharth @nickcammarata @limitoftruth "Brains are literally computers" is a huge map-territory error. Nothing is literally anything else. All communication is structural and metaphorical. You need to specify in what ways things are alike or different, or you will make confusions in your communications.
@meekaale @nosilverv @xuenay Mmm I'd throw some metaphor design at it. What meanings do you want to experience when walking in, when working, etc? What fictional - even fantastical - character might inhabit this workspace? What (metaphorically) would be built here? Tools? Starships?
I just got added to @jessems Technological Therapy list, along with @nosilverv, @xuenay, and @nickcammarata. Not sure exactly what it's pointing at, but curious to hear anybody's thoughts about what/who else might belong on this list! twitter.com/i/lists/133081…
what embodied actions do the people you chat with online evoke for you, with their digital moves?
@AskYatharth @nickcammarata @limitoftruth Brains obviously compute, but not everything that computes "is literally a computer". Almost everyone writes, but most would say no if if I asked "are you a writer?" There are all sorts of connotations implied. If you don't want ALL of those connotations, communicate better.
@AskYatharth @nickcammarata @limitoftruth And if you can't name a few differences between silicon computers* and brains, then you have a completely different problem! *plus our experience of interfacing with them, which is also part of the connotations For this problem, read… McGilchrist? hmm
not to mention the people who would say "yes" if I asked "are you a writer?" but who don't actually write 😆

Thread · Would You Rather as a non-coercive productivity technique
"Would You Rather" is usually known as a party game, but it can also be a productivity technique! #noncoercion Here's how: 1. Pick 2 things you might do {A, B} 2. Ask, "WYR do A, or B?" (say it's B) 3. Ask, "WYR do B, or C?" 4. continue until you'd rather do X than continue WYR!
I tagged the tweet #noncoercion because part of the whole point of this is to train your capacity to notice: • your own preferences & appetites • that you can choose to do things that you want • you don't need to do "the best thing" • you don't really need any reasons at all
And you can get out of this game any time, including in a way that's compatible with the game: just ask "would I rather do this thing (my current best candidate) or would I rather just stop doing this WYR thing?"
You can also do meta-stuff... like if you've been putting off P for weeks: • "would I rather do P or reflect on why I haven't done P yet?" • "…P or brainstorm ways to approach P?" • "…P or explain why P is actually impossible?"
I invented this approach spontaneously when a friend of mine was really stuck at one point and having trouble accessing any sense of appetite, and we ended up doing some fun things and fixing a thing she'd been putting off for awhile.
If you'd like to experience me spontaneously inventing novel approaches to places where *you're* stuck, check out this online workshop with content, coworking, & live coaching by me and a bunch of other cool peeps. complice.co/event/plan2021…
I was really in touch with some general cybernetics / systems thinking principles around the time I wrote this tweet. Slightly less in touch with those now, and a little concerned about that. Maybe an inspiration to get back into spaced repetition…
@visakanv I was initially trying to come up with something super meta but then I was like actually concretely: spreading the word about the Goal-Crafting Intensives! Your FANs would likely vibe quite a lot with the workshop on many levels and get lots from it. complice.co/event/plan2021…
@visakanv Actually as I was writing that tweet it occurred to me that you might make an awesome coach for the event too! (Given your skill at advising people via DM 😛) And I think you'd have a blast doing it. I've already recruited @nosilverv this year:
@visakanv @nosilverv Coaching basically consists of hanging out in dozens of chat threads at once and helping people get unstuck on whatever level of abstraction seems relevant. Some of the coaches are familiar with the workshop video content & exercises, but lots (probably most) aren't.
@visakanv @nosilverv Part of what's fun about it is you get to pick which coaching channels you want to respond, because there are 6-10 other coaches to answer if you don't. And you get to see how others reply!

@DavidCrandall_W @visakanv I mean same thing happens with "British accent". Canada (where I'm from) definitely has some subtle regionalisms, but aside from some Atlantic ones such as Newfie & Cape Breton accents (both Irish-influenced) most Canadians can't name any or particularly distinguish them.

@SpencrGreenberg Whenever I'm trying to talk numbers with someone who knows more about the situation than me but claims to "have no idea" because they haven't read "How To Measure Anything", I just walk them through a confidence interval process by naming some extreme values. Cunningham's Law.
@SpencrGreenberg recent example, verbatim from chat history — — — me: do you have a lower bound on how long it'll be til the API is available to everyone? X: nope unfortunately not me: hm, so like, it could launch next week? X: oh definitely not next week definitely not by the end of the year
@SpencrGreenberg A little harder when seeking an average, but you can just try naming some datapoints and seeing if they're common, unusual, super-rare, or never-seen. I think @juliagalef had a thread on this at some point.
@SpencrGreenberg @juliagalef I will also caveat that there are many important situations where the idea of averages being a useful way to understand things is fundamentally confused! Average-based reasoning was developed for charting planets, not for complex systems like humans.
@andy_matuschak Shortly after @waitbutwhy got a ton of backers on @Patreon, he went into a hole for over a year to do some really long-form writing. Pretty cool experiment imho. I think he intended it to be shorter but (as things do) it ballooned into a huge project.
@andy_matuschak @headgameus This blog post of mine (considered by many to be my best piece of writing) represents a year of struggling with a question both conceptually and experientially. Nearly 4k words, but still a blog post. malcolmocean.com/2017/11/transc…

@benskuhn 😂 were you actually googling "hard problems to work on", or...?
So here's an interesting thing. Me and many others (some with expertise) reasoned way back in March that aerosols weren't in practice sources of covid transmission. Now it seems the conclusion is they definitely are. Oops. But... why oops? Why this particular oops?
Well, implicitly, it seems like "airborne" carries connotations that are more specific than just "does ever spread by aerosol". It pulls up the image of measles, which has an R₀ of like 15. This image, from February, illustrates the question being posed here.

And it seems, awkwardly, that the answer didn't fall neatly into the natural categories that were available, so... we missed it. I think this is a huge piece of "why oops". Modus tollens applied imprecisely: "not as contagious as measles ⇒ not airborne" twitter.com/jpsalvesen/sta…
On a different level, the initial mask shortage fiasco also probably muddied waters. If cloth masks mostly block droplets but not aerosol (which I gather is the case) then they're way more useful in a world where aerosol transmission is mostly not a factor. Motivated reasoning?
figuring @diviacaroline & @WilliamAEden would appreciate this, as I remember talking about this stuff with them at the time

Thread · Source and helpers vs. leader and follower metaphors · 5 of 7 tweets
@SeanMombo I don't think there is a single "context of Leader vs Follower". I've recently been digging Peter Koenig's "Source" model, where a source doesn't have followers but helpers (ppl helping realize their vision). I might've used "channeler" or something to extend "source" metaphor 🤔
@SeanMombo Great summary of that model on workwithsource.com I've seen lots of people try to adopt this model and end up talking about "source and follower" though, which is a huge type error in my opinion. Like referring to your kid as an employee.
@SeanMombo Taking the "leader & follower" metaphor seriously, one might reanimate it as "trailblazer" and "signposter" or something. Like one who finds a new route and another who makes it more easy to traverse for future. Idk.
@SeanMombo I've led myself to an odd take here: perhaps in this sense a "thought leader" is arguably more legitimately doing *leadership* than a captain of a team or head of a company. The thought leader has new thoughts before other people have them, and others follow afterwards.
@SeanMombo Whereas the head of a company isn't *leading* people anywhere in the metaphorical sense. Although I guess in the sense of having a vision first, though in some sense that's a subcase of thought leadership 😆
@AskYatharth @spiral_virus I was thinking yesterday about how "lol" is its own thing that exists fully in the silent realm, & that that's a necessary role and contrasting that with an utterance like "I burst out laughing when I read that" which explicitly imports my situated physicality into the text
Thread · Source and helpers vs. leader and follower metaphors · 2 of 7 tweets
@SeanMombo I think it's important to explicitly differentiate: - Source of vision - role model - mentor - manager/director - star performer (vs supporting actor / backup singer) & many more
@SeanMombo @CoryWong has a great clip about being a sideman, and he explicitly talks about vision but also kind of about the frontman, so that's the first & last of the bullets in the previous tweet. Those two could (in music or other contexts) be separate though. youtube.com/watch?v=Swh4uZ…

Found myself thinking about 2 meanings of "pure": One is like "has one molecule": pure sugar. Usually refined from nature. Another is "has one ingredient": pure honey 🍯. "Natural", no additives, but complex constituents.

@mattgoldenberg I think that is the more general meaning, it's just interesting because the connotations are very different because pure molecule is usually quite processed whereas pure ingredient is somewhat unprocessed.
@AskYatharth Mm I like this but it also seems potentially a bit counteractive in the coherence therapy sense.
