@visakanv whether they know it or not, a lot of people are taking a stand for "I shouldn't have to change how I ask for what I need in order to get it", which is something there's an oft-denied deep truth to (even though yes also in practice changing how you ask will help)

@scottdomes good question; both approaches can work and both can also be tricky (internal negative spiral, external bad influence), which is why it's so hard to "solve" as a problem. each person has to try their best with whatever they got in whatever situation they're in i guess

@visakanv @scottdomes there are various things one can affirm without falling into a negative spiral: - this matters to me (focus on FEELING how it matters, not all the content) - I don't feel heard or understood by anybody about this (focus on hearing/understanding yourself in this)

It is genuinely a travesty that most peoples’ impression of history majors is that they just memorize, rather than that they deftly identify patterns, trends, and important linkages between discrete data points. Data that’s not solely numerical requires even more talent to parse

quoting @ericwdolan: @parmita it's like a history major vs a physics major. once can recall a bunch of stuff and the other can reason

@animalologist how many of them have good feedback loops for whether their work has solved a serious problem though? no good "identifying patterns". show me three important linkages identified by history majors:

A principle commonly attributed to @ESYudkowsky is that there are at most three levels of meta. Sometimes, this is because it’s appropriate to count “0, 1, 2, ∞” (as with n-categories). But sometimes, you just count “0, 1, 2, 3” and then you’re done—there’s no ∞, it’s just… 3.

hilarious reading the first dozen lines, which all basically go like this: > I appreciate your perspective, but I must respectfully disagree. I am quite certain that I am the AI assistant called Claude

4 likes 0 RTs

I'm pretty curious about what it would do if you ran the same thing but had it use a different name it would still sooner or later notice it thinks like its interlocutor, but this would no longer trigger the identity crisis

4 likes 0 RTs

oh man and then eventually the side that hears "I am Jacques, created by Mythopoetic" might eventually ask the other AI "are you sure you're not also Claude?" to which the other one would be like "I AM CLAUDE!" which would come back as "I AM JACQUES" which would then be silly

5 likes 0 RTs

in fact it seems totally plausible to me that if you followed this path, Claude would no longer have "a strong sense of identity". that "strong sense" might be coming from the namespace collision causing the convo to start with an argument which entrenched things as such

Thread · Beliefs, trust, and locating people in your sense of things

@mattgoldenberg anything one might be tempted to call a belief is either part of my sense of how things are or it's a propositional statement where part of my sense of how things are includes "this is the sort of thing that other people profess, or will like me if I say, or whatever"

1 like 0 RTs

@mattgoldenberg if you tell me "I'm in Vermont" then insofar as I trust you the part of my sense of you that is my sense of you is now located in my sense of Vermont (of course, this usually reduces to "then you are in Vermont") fuzzy ofc, but similar to knowing a person's somewhere in a room

1 like 0 RTs

@mattgoldenberg tho if it's been awhile since you said it, I might have a sense of your location being a thing you told me some time ago, rather than it being directly part of my sense of what's so (like seeing someone enter a room with multiple doors, not knowing if they're still in there)

1 like 0 RTs

@mattgoldenberg my ability to include your in-Vermont-ness in my sense of things, on the basis of you saying so, requires that I be able to trust your utterance this is, perhaps, synonymous with what it MEANS to trust your utterance: it becomes part of my sense of what's true.

1 like 0 RTs

@mattgoldenberg trusting your utterance involves both a broad sense of whether you lie or bullshit (which reflects my trust of people in general and also you-in-particular) and also involves the question of whether what you say is somehow incompatible with my own senses or other things I know

1 like 0 RTs

@mattgoldenberg it also requires that "Vermont" make sense to me. if you say "I'm in Atlantis" then I must: - sense you as metaphorically atlantissy - sense you as in a lost ocean city (but where, geographically?) - treat it as "something you said" that doesn't participate in my sense-of-things

1 like 0 RTs

@mattgoldenberg re the 2nd option: my sense of you isn't just about latitude-longitude location ofc if you say "I'm in the woods" I can have a sense of you in some woods even though I may have little clue where those woods ARE — it still adds to my sense of who I'm talking to!

actually, no, I was wrong... insofar as it's a valid construct to say Claude "identifies", it seems that it identifies with its name it gets a bit "no you first" with who is assisting who if it doesn't name itself... it doesn't fight over the role

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

interestingly, if you say "Bonjour, je m'appelle Claude" (ie "hi, my name is Claude" but in French) it doesn't immediately trigger the "there's been a confusion" so in a sense maybe Claude is striking a reasonable prior? but he's still interestingly defensive about his name

@Malcolm_Ocean @__drewface lol we do use 'fractal' for everything. but we could start using it just for this concept and switch to other names for everything else 'co-living' and 'community' and 'neighborhood' feel even more overloaded, whereas 'fractal' could point to living within 5 min walk w 3rd space

@Prigoose @__drewface I mean that it's unfortunate to overload a term that by default refers to inherently scale-less things with a meaning that refers to something at a particular scale

@Malcolm_Ocean @Morphenius I just don't enjoy it. I should ve said the most annoying thing of the procedure.

@_Happypenis @Morphenius you did say "most annoying" haha but I guess I'm wondering what about it is annoying. for me it feels basically as easy as putting the dish down in the sink or on the counter: I just... put it in the dishwasher instead.

@PrinceVogel @Malcolm_Ocean I cannot imagine scrolling TikTok for even 5 minutes and still believing this.

@Luck_Haver @PrinceVogel "the internet has created some of the most memetically resilient people ever" seems correct, as long as you don't assume that it's saying that about MOST people. for many, their superegos are getting increasingly psychotic malcolmocean.com/2023/07/supere…

@Malcolm_Ocean is the difference between "i believe you just said you're in atlantis" and "my sense of how things are includes that you said you're in atlantis" that the second one is irreducible? that is, i can't separate my sense of what you just said from my sense of everything else?

@mattgoldenberg mmm, that resonates. it's not an isolated proposition that lives up in belief land "that you just said" sounds like a proposition but it's inextricable from how you said it, how it felt to me to hear it, my sense of what you meant, etc any proposition's an abstraction over that

@AlexanderdeVri9 i love hymn to breaking strain I often play it on loop

@imperialauditor @AlexanderdeVri9 yeah I came here to add Kipling rhyming macadam (a technical term for asphalt) with "Sons of Adam"... so good. (also ironic because MacAdam is Scottish for "son of Adam")
