@Malcolm_Ocean What's going on here? What I see is an astrologer peeling away a layer of false, revealing another layer of false underneath. And I can't tell, from what you've written here, whether the inner layer fooled you, or what.

@jimrandomh Don't think I'm fooled. Not even sure what that'd mean. I have the impression people get results from astrology in the same way they do from tarot; it helps them tap intuitions or whatever. Whether those results are particularly good is another whole question. I've seen bad.

@Johnicholas @uthmanzi it's whole-person desire but it's not very well-organized desire. in some cases it's literally a linear combination of two parameters that results in a shitty compromise that's way worse than either single option or it's an oscillation see this thread:

@Malcolm_Ocean I don’t think it’s true people need other people to do things for apparent reasons. Most people don’t think about why people are doing stuff — they assume there are reasons. It’s more like: it can’t look like you’re out of control or non-responsive to critical reasons.

@metaLulie I think people get pretty weird when someone says "no" or changes their mind without saying why. This is pretty normative: facebook's Events feature offers these RSVP options: "Yes", "Maybe", "Can't Go" there's no "no" without an implied "it's not you" reason

@Malcolm_Ocean the rule of thumb for surface area (in case of burns) is that each is - arm 1/11 - leg 2/11 - front of torso 2/11 - back of torso 2/11 - head 1/11 seems plausible that this would be proportional to weight

@himbodhisattva I mean cube-square laws suggest not. Would be if they all had the same cross-section, but torso gets much more mass per unit area than arms because thicker.

@p_millerd @alt_visa I'm starting a "make 100 introductions" thingy, and it's occurring to me that I recently introduced two people who've known each other for 9 years but have never quite sync'd up, and I got one of them to See the other in a new way. That feels like another thing to do 100 of.

Thread · Ending a 3.5-year marriage and what I learned from it

With a heavy heart, I have a life update to share: that I’ve come to clarity that I need to end my 3.5y marriage with @SarahAMcManus. While she’s one of the most amazing people I know, I’ve realized that I don’t feel like a romantic partnership is right for us 💔

130 likes 18 RTs

This took a lot of soul-searching & clarifying, because on so many levels we were more of a match than I’d known possible. I had to tease apart many dimensions of our marriage: - purpose-oriented partnership - spiritual/cosmic bond - romantic dyadship - coparenting possibilities

45 likes 0 RTs

It’s the hardest decision I’ve made in my life, but when I finally recognized the embodied sense of incompatibility I’d been denying/fighting, & realized it wasn’t going to change... I knew it wouldn’t get any easier if I waited, & I didn’t want to get even deeper in (eg kids!)

37 likes 1 RT

I feel awful that Sarah uprooted her life to be with me & made a huge bet on our relationship that’s now falling apart. I strive to be someone people can wisely bet on. At the same time, I’m proud of myself for having the courage to do it now rather than in a few years w/ a kid.

43 likes 1 RT

We tried really hard to make things work, in the face of internal & external challenges. Numerous friends have told us that our dedication & creativity has inspired them. Through being married, I’ve come to appreciate the catalytic power of the shift from “whether” to “how”.

49 likes 2 RTs

As my sense of the meaning of marriage deepened & evolved, I also found the limits of that power—it requires a shared felt sense of the “what” for which there’s a “how”. Sarah & I share a sense of humor, and have a ton of resonance on big picture levels: purpose, principles, etc.

38 likes 0 RTs

In trying to focus on the big picture stuff, I’d been shushing part of myself that was trying to say… it’s hard to put into words but something like “this is not how a romantic life partnership is supposed to feel, for me”.

41 likes 2 RTs

It wasn’t a conventional romantic life partnership, even for an open marriage. During our engagement convo, S said ~"this doesn't preclude either of us having as close a bond with others", which was about both non-monogamy & about larger-scale purpose-based bonds.

34 likes 0 RTs

I wanted so much to be close with Sarah that I bet on us changing or some larger whole emerging in which the feeling of incompleteness would now feel complete, but this attitude was fundamentally non-accepting of each of us, and of reality.

38 likes 0 RTs

There’s a quote I’ve been thinking about a lot:  “my boundaries are the closest distance   where I can love you & me simultaneously” This marriage was too close a distance for us.

106 likes 10 RTs

Scaling samesided relationships is a puzzle we’re still deeply interested in. I still think it’s possible, though at this point I’ve been thoroughly humbled by the incredible challenge it is to do with even 2 people.

40 likes 0 RTs

I love Sarah tremendously—I wouldn’t be here otherwise. I’m looking forward to seeing what she does in her life and can speak highly of her as someone willing to go the distance in a committed relationship and get to the bottom of the tangliest of misunderstandings. 🙏

@Malcolm_Ocean This is an interesting question. My guess is "not very well" because, in my experience, prompts are usually taken very literal.. meaning it would generate an image of a physical kaleidoscope instead of understanding that you're looking for the filter/effect

@skyyygazer I'm pretty sure that with the right prompt it would know what you were talking about, the question is whether it would manage perfect symmetry

@RobertHaisfield cool! I'd enjoy jamming with you about it sometime if you want! I think what I say in the vid applies here too: this line of thinking gets confused by the connotations of the word "reward". probably clear on a neurological level, but still rife for metaphor slippage

0 likes 0 RTs

@RobertHaisfield reward has a strong sense of "someone gives you a prize as compensation for something" which is appropriate in the VERY UNNATURAL context of a skinner box or other neuroscience lab study context and 99.9% irrelevant to the ordinary or evolutionary learning context of an organism

concept of willpower as "energy", a finite resource that you start the morning with some amount of, and then use up throughout the day, seems fundamentally flawed in some way

@amirism_ aside from a few rare things like lifting weights, willpower is mostly only involved in trying to fight yourself hence sleepiness when looking at todo list—some part of you doesn't want to, and is saying "no"

@rape_wh1stle @piva_jonas @QiaochuYuan maybe a difference here between A pressuring B to make a decision, vs A & B orienting together towards some external factor which causes them both to see that there's a timely situation that needs responding to but then it's just real urgency, not *rushing*

This is a really neat little deconstruction, and gives a term to something I've noticed but not really understood. I'm gonna talk about my experiences here as a Type 1 dancer and see if I can't shed some light on things for the more Type 2 dancers who seem a bit confused by it.

quoting @Malcolm_Ocean: whoa @Aella_Girl put words to a thing I've been feeling aware of for years and haven't quite been able to name: there are 2 totally different kinds of dancing I feel like I could have literally written this blog post. Every word matches my experience. https://t.co/cgdDTEWd0i ht

@SlimePriestess this mostly doesn't help me but I appreciate you giving it a shot! (I also don't feel like type 2 dancing focuses on specific moves per se. I'm mostly not "doing moves" while dancing; meanwhile you're saying there are type 1 moves to learn?)

In much the same way that you can't trust a yes unless a no is possible, you can't trust an answer unless an "I don't know"…

you can't choose to expect someone to do anything other than what you expect them to do but you can choose to let them do it, if you can trust yourself to take care of yourself no matter what happens

"trust as an unquestioning attitude" this concept from C. Thi Nguyen, which I got from @DRMacIver, is a helpful lens for integrating: — the NNTD concept of trust-as-truth, that you discover & explore but can't change directly — other lenses like "trust is a choice"

2 likes 0 RTs

I came up with this as an articulation of the synthesis between these two concepts of trust:

mostly people don't allow others the freedom to actually make their own mistakes if we expect someone else to do something we don't like, we try to get all up in their gears to stop them this is disruptive to their learning process, and feels pretty fundamentally disrespectful

there's something important here about boundaries “the distance at which I can love you and me simultaneously.” a healthy boundary isn't about telling someone "don't do X", it's about creating enough space that they can do X without disturbing you tasshin.com/blog/boundarie…

quoting @Morphenius: @visakanv When I quit caffeine, all the places said "about 2–4 weeks". But it took more like 5 MONTHS to get back to "w/ coffee" levels of functional. Part was having to learn a diff relationship w/ energy. Why'd I turn to coffee in the 1st place? Had to face that, but a bit atr

thinking of making a patreon, not particularly to get more money on any immediate timescale (tho I like money) ...but to create a context where people can directly support my work in the world and I can communicate with people who are into my work in that way 💞

I almost feel like everyone doing anything at all public-facing should just have a patreon

@alt_visa sounds a lil like you're tryna convince yourself it's fine I'm inclined to do a lil coherence move here: some part of you thinks it's legit *not fine* what does that part know? what does it mean about you, or about the world, if you're misunderstood like this?

I'm beta-testing a feature for complice.co where all of the goal-colors are desaturated 60% and tbh I kinda like it. I mean I also like garish but there's something relaxing about this 😆 so uhh if you've avoided Complice because it's too colorful, hmu

What I want to push back against is the implied ontology of the tweet, that is "we have a list of the valid categories and you know you're valid because you have a category and it's in this list (or we would add it to the list if you gave it a name)"

There's something a little crazy about northern summers. I'm near Seattle. This near the solstice it's still light at 9:30pm. Dawn starts before 5am. The only sane solution seems to be midday naps.

@Morphenius I took two today, having gotten up at 5:30am I didn't intend to get up quite so early but I got my worst-ever charley horse napped at 10am and 2pm reminds me of my old polyphasic days xD

any other youtubers know if it's possible to get youtube to stop asking you for each individual video if your stuff is made for kids? I'm not making anything for kids. maybe there should be a button that says "don't ask again for 3mo"

Twitter and YouTube, in different ways, are such amazing mediums for articulating stuff at the edge of my understanding.

@Malcolm_Ocean if you’re vibing with the desaturated colours, it might also be worth looking at pastel colours. They tend to be more delightful than sundried

@trstn_ca the colorpicker already allowed picking pastel colors, but some of the color transformations (eg in the screenshot how there are many variations on the yellowish goal 4 color) would end up having them turn out pretty vivid

@Malcolm_Ocean @DRMacIver i think the act of demonstration is a reward, being on stage is winning the reward is the experience of surviving stress like the demon at your heels the fear is stress and safety is the reward youtu.be/jDWGrOMaFds

@iopred @DRMacIver mmm, interesting yeah, hormones etc are definitely playing a role I think of @hubermanlab talking about how learning new affordances/behaviors requires an attitude of play, distinct from drilling something definitely in many cases stress isn't helping tho. contracts awareness

What's a SaaS product that would be fun to build?

@garybasin I'd have a lot of fun with all the interface elements of building a better audio streaming app, as long as someone else wrangled the licensing.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Design Rant time! Today: audio streaming services. Why are they all the same old boring things and stuck in the same old metaphors of "playlists" and "radio"? Virtual ports of old music-library managers. Lots of improvements to be made—in particular, tags! #ThingsIWantToExist twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

Should I increase the price of my Alexander Technique course because inflation? it’s been the same price ($250, discounted to $150 if needed) for over a year now I think I am averse to raising prices without adding content, hmm

@m_ashcroft I've thought about this too for GCI & Complice. Both prices haven't changed (5y & 9y respectively). Some of my costs have increased in that time, some have actually decreased. I think every year is probably the wrong frequency to do it just for inflation, but idfk

@himbodhisattva Yeah, totally. Humans are also defining what "aware" means on their scale. If there are higher orders of awareness, we literally cannot understand those, & from their POV human "understanding" is super limited — like we view the "understanding" of cells to be limited.

@Morphenius @himbodhisattva Good point, tho we *can* at least talk about the fact that there may be higher orders of awareness or understanding, which (I'm pretty sure) cells cannot!
