weird idea: a social network where all posts must start with "I seem to think" or "I feel" or "I noticed" or "I wonder" or something like that. cultivate a vibe of I-statements (not actually a good idea so far but interesting to think about)

it's interesting how "I think" is sort of an assertion but "I seem to think" is an observation

One of the challenges of arguing for (future) progress: (1) People don’t see how the future could be much better, and (2) when you tell them how, they don’t believe you because it sounds like science fiction

people say “no is a full sentence” and we should practice just saying “no” with no explanations, but if that feels too short/cold for you, might i suggest: “no thank you” ? works a treat

@MichelleAkin also "nah I'm good" one nice thing about this is it also means that questions like "do you have our loyalty card?" don't come back with a "do you want to get it?" after your "no"

I think ppl have over-generalized the word "cult" from the traditional definition to just any niche group with high esprit de corps- imo this is bad because the narrower definition is the type we should worry about.

quoting @tardoraptor: The obsession to not be ‘in a cult’ is a predominantly recent, liberal development. It is okay to feel like you’re in one and feel cohesion with other cult members.

@mimi10v3 yeah part of the issue imo is reifying cults as a sort of binary thing as opposed to recognizing that the most awesome groups have things in common with the worst cults, but THEY ARE DIFFERENT, and talking about dynamics rather than "is this a cult?"

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@Malcolm_Ocean lol this thread feels like it has some solid fundamentals and also some dangling comments that seem to invite ionno ridicule ? ' concern ? ' at least from my perspective ' like "defending the right to traumatize people" is clearly to me a slightly ungenerous

@nobuhojimichaan yeah, it was poorly phrased. I was rushing off to a call or dinner or something. thanks what I mean is "we need to not treat the standard of how much people get traumatized by weird experiments as zero". the question of how much is okay is... hard. and an empirical one.

5 likes 0 RTs

@nobuhojimichaan another angle on it is something like... there are lots of worthwhile learning environments that people want to go to, that may be traumatizing as part of the learning process, and if we tried to make these not exist it would just result in witchhunts and more secrecy

4 likes 0 RTs

@nobuhojimichaan and by "traumatizing as part of the learning process" I don't even mean like "incidentally, as a side effect" in 2023, as of my knowledge, the only methods anybody knows for teaching certain skills are inherently a bit traumatic some are much better/worse tho!

3 likes 0 RTs

@nobuhojimichaan can we improve on that status quo? I sure hope so! but one of the places improvements come from is people leaving those contexts having gained the new skills and a desire to share them, and ALSO having gained determination not to get others tangled up the way they got tangled

@nobuhojimichaan yeah, it's very easy for it all to turn into side-taking and no matter our role, we can all help keep that from happening even in the language to describe those roles... eg "accused" enacts a whole legal metaphor. contrast with "person someone else seems to think is dangerous"

@Malcolm_Ocean So, can we define culty? I think there's a fundamental thing that makes communities toxic, and that's when the community takes more than it gives. To me a cult is when you are trapped in that kind of vampiric flow. But if the aim of the group is liberation + empowerment? Hmm.

@mykola lots of communities take a bunch in one dimension while giving a lot in another dimension and if you're starved on dimension 2, then this community is an incredible beautiful resource! ...that is also potentially gonna mess you up sooner or later

Do people have a moral obligation to refuse to have a sex with someone they know is in a monogamous relationship? Do sex workers have a moral obligation to refuse service to someone they know is in a monogamous relationship?

@rmbalt huh. seems to me the strength of the ~moral obligation sorta corresponds to the extent to which you feel you share a community fuck a married friend? yikes fuck a married tinder match? eaagh fuck a married person while on holiday? eh fuck a married fellow member of humanity? hmm

@rmbalt and I think this is part of where the intuition with the sex worker comes from—the transactional quality negates even what shared sense of community might come from living in the same neighborhood

@sun_girlxo nobody is an average person the "average person" is a myth and does not exist sure, if you take any particular trait, you can find someone close to the average but nobody is average on all traits

@TerrifyingWords @luckysean the nature of what it means to "own" something is not as obvious as it seems, and when it comes to owning one of the finite parcels of the natural world, and having the government protect your right to own it—for almost nothing... what's the trade?

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@TerrifyingWords @luckysean like it makes sense to me that people are paid for providing value to the world. Landlord in hearing: "How can I afford to give them multiple months of rent for free?" RTB - "What do you mean by afford you aren't giving them anything?..." Then dawns the realization that the landlord has been living off their tenants entirely.

@luckysean the landlord has been living off the fact that once you own land the government protects your right to own it, for a fee of almost nothing in some sense this landowner is actually living off government subsidies (but also this makes rents go too high)

it is clear by looking at myself in a camera while I work that I store computations in my body, to be processed. when I am looking something up, I furrow my brow until my curiosity is resolved. I imagine that I do this in order to remember what I'm doing / stay on task.

@__drewface the Alexander Technique folks suggest that a lot of this is performative although it seems to me that some of it is authentic, like the "natural movement of the body while thinking such a thought". whereas some is more layery fake trying-to-appear-to-be-thinking @m_ashcroft?

clear communication is virtuous, overindexing on subtext creates weird twists you offload to your conversation partner. is it a question or request? dont make it a statement. is it an observation or do you want something? straight speech makes subtext more powerful & useful too

reminds me of when I heard someone say, aghast, "and then he went and did it after I said I didn't know if it was a good idea!" and I was like... "if you thought it was a bad idea you could have said that" common but janky to sub in "I don't know if" for "I don't think that"

I am unconvinced by the idea that "we" can recognize AGI when "we" can no longer distinguish it from our own performance. Many people are already outperformed by LLMs on many intellectual tasks, but that's in part because many people are habitually deepfaking general

quoting @hamandcheese: “When will we develop AGI” can thus be substituted with “when will we have the compute to faithfully emulate human performance on tasks that require general intelligence?” This revives the core insight of the original Turing Test: *indistinguishability* implies competence. https
