@Malcolm_Ocean IIRC Adam Savage (of MythBusters fame) praised TARS with a similar comment as yours: minimalist in terms of pivot points and motors, and using just a very refined sense of balance to accomplish complex motions and tasks

@rmbalt Yeah honestly I didn't think TARS was realistic but maybe it is? I think some of its joints seemed too high-torque or something.

Why’s it always seem like the people that get burnt out are sitting in an office working maybe 5 actual hours, and the people that are on their feet doing real work 8+ hours a day never do?

@BecomingCritter Burnout is largely about a sense of work being impossible/intractable and of unclear value ...which is less common with physical work since feedback loops are clearer and it's generally better defined and more obviously useful. Stressors there are simpler (tho not per se better)

@chburdett Some people don't have a lot of experience with collective trains of thought, and are sufficiently conversationally loud that this means they end up usually winning the fight they perceive for whose train of thought gets to be the conversation.

@MattPirkowski @jacksonrichards yeah like if some of Marx's ideas are great and worth salvaging, let's salvage them and talk about the new versions that aren't bound up in resent etc we can give credit to Marx as an inspiration while saying "also he was confused, read the original only as context if at all"

@alephLibrae @Malcolm_Ocean 🤣apologies, just framing it in a frivolous way. I only read thus far and stopped "each neuron has the capacity for exactly one thought" because the means to measure this are impossible, being that "thoughts" are complex and there is no base with which to really accurately

@Vveeveeanna @alephLibrae yeah I mean this is basically a metaphor obviously what a "thought" is to a neuron is different than it is for a whole human (or a fruit fly) so what I'm doing here is playing with the idea of framing "neuron activates" as it thinking the only thought it knows how to think

2 likes 0 RTs

and without knowing where that neuron is located, we can't say much about what the thought means, but we can say with certainty that in the context of where the neuron is in the connectome, it is having a perception of something occurring which is relevant

to be clear, by ~20mins, it's not like I'm thinking, then noticing I'm thinking, then returning to the breath or whatever. that = meditating I'm thinking, then notici—then thinking my mind gets too chaotic to successfully return my attention to anything

I suppose I could explore doing this anyway, without any deeper intent, and see what happens (I guess that's kind of like shikantaza / "just sit" meditation? but I feel unmotivated to do do things when I don't sense a feedback loop, which seems likely)

what do you call the big aims that you organize your life towards? (what you've chosen to focus on, amongst many possibilities. what you measure your progress in relation to. what matters most to you. etc)

14 likes 1 RT

context: we're overhauling the Goal-Crafting Intensive content, and considering renaming the big life directiony things (that so far we've called "goals")

5 likes 0 RTs

one candidate we have is "intentions", which I like in many ways, but I worry it might confuse people who use Intend/Complice, where "intentions" currently refers to "intentions for today", ie small tangible actions etc., rather than overarching aims

Intend (12/100 threads) @IntendApp ·

Another lens on why complice.co has "intentions" instead of "to-dos": A "to-do" or a "task" is a thing, that supposedly exists external to you. Disconnected. An "intention" is a relationship you have, with your own future. It's internal, embodied.

The question I would be asking if I were @Mozilla: why are people who are building new browsers basing their browsers on Chromium, NOT Firefox? eg @ArcInternet is seeing major success atm, but it just contributes to the Chromium share. (The issue, ICYMI, is that if Firefox dies then Google will kind of own the internet and this monoculture will be very bad.) If the answer is a technical issue, solve it. Literally don't spend technical time on anything else that could be spent on solving it. If the answer is that these companies WANT the ability to ship closed source forks, which they can do with Chromium but (as I understand it) can't do with Firefox given its license... then uhh maybe that's a sign that Firefox needs to allow that to happen!!! (in order to continue to be competitive in this ecosystem) Given that nobody has the resources to start from scratch at this phase and make a THIRD browser engine that implements the entire web spec, maybe there needs to be the possibility of profit from forking Firefox!

(Long post, grab a coffee) Cognition steers, instinct drives. Human conflict (the sad topic of our times) is STEERED by individual differences in what people believe to be true, but human conflict is DRIVEN by universal similarities in how each individual instinctively

@MJPiercello Hmmm some of the stuff you're saying is universal still seems to me to be culturally contingent, or more technically it's contingent on the cultural platform we broadly share

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@QiaochuYuan @a_witch_in_time Yeah, I generally phrase this as "because the DSM measures deviation from norm, it is structurally incapable of recognizing a dysfunctional condition that everyone has." I tried to say this to a group of ppl at YC120 and one of them literally said "but then it would be normal!"

2 likes 0 RTs

@MJPiercello And moreover, depending on how you talk about those possibly-universal elements, you get a very different picture of what sort of thing a human is, which is both part of the conflicts we're having in the first place and relevant to the way out!

@FU_joehudson how awesome music feels to listen to and/or dance to it's not that the logical mind can't deconstruct the music into the elements that make it great, but it can't remotely approach doing so in real time

Thread · Two aspects of coercion: material and existential · 17 of 18 tweets

there are two aspects of coercion, let's call 'em material & existential they're not fully separable, but if we tried: 🗡️ material coercion = "do what I want or face a huge punishment. your choice" 😳 existential coercion = "you must do X. anything else is unthinkably bad"

17 likes 2 RTs

material coercion is external: severe consequences that one agent inflicts or threatens on another, to gain compliance. perhaps it differs from mere incentives in the overwhelmingness of punishment. not a mere penalty but one intended to dwarf any benefit had by disobeying

7 likes 0 RTs

existential coercion is internal: one's experience of the world becomes warped such that noncompliant options are unthinkable in ongoing situations, generally mediated by shame or guilt 😳, but eg a salesperson can use other kinds of pressure to collapse awareness ⌛️

8 likes 0 RTs

*pure* material coercion is rare that is, that material coercion is usually also accompanied by some amount of convincing people to not feel free to consider disobeying (ie existential coercion)

5 likes 0 RTs

why is *pure* material coercion rare? 1. it requires being honest about the fact that you're coercing someone else's will that's just as real as yours, which:  a) is hard for non-psychopaths to stomach  b) encourages rebellion 2. it's costly & crude! (& requires catching them)

8 likes 0 RTs

pure material coercion requires a substantial physical power-over relationship (⛓️ imprisonment or 🗡️ violence or 🌽 monopoly on goods/info) otherwise the person will simply gtfo tho there's also eg "withholding sex/affection from monogamous partner"... a kind of monopoly there

6 likes 0 RTs

ah: and a common phenomenon where the individual coercer doesn't have a monopoly on anything but the person's other options aren't really any better (this shows up with landlords or employers sometimes)

9 likes 1 RT

but even here—lots of people are very keen to psy-op this woman into thinking life can't be better than this! to make her think she doesn't have other options. vs "yeah, it sucks, here's how I cope/improved/escaped etc" twitter.com/TTEcclesBrown/…

all of these mechanisms, he notes, manipulate the ego and insofar as society is organized via subjugated egos, these are clearly the means by which it's done

2 likes 0 RTs

however, many of us sense, there's a possibility of organizing humanity in manner that's less egoic and more fluid/nondual—respecting our fundamental freedom to do what we want the basis is win-win opportunities that are obviously mutually attractive once seen

3 likes 0 RTs

whether or not that's possible, or viable at scale, it's certainly possible to do inner work to shift one's own way of being in a way that accords with your own fundamental freedom

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

you are absolutely free to do what you want you are not free from the consequences of doing what you do you wouldn't want to be—otherwise what would be the point of doing it?

2 likes 0 RTs

that is, you can develop a kind of willingness to actually entertain what would happen if you didn't comply, which can allow you to be essentially unhookable by others' attempts at existential coercion

2 likes 0 RTs

Guy @nosilverv ·

Cool to cross "general empowerment is an intrinsic good for agents that don't know what they want" with @CurziRose's model of subconscious handshakes as necessary to enter RDF's (alternate realities) Also cool to recall that the Devil promises power and always has a contract.

Welp, Shane either has no plan for inner alignment, or no plan he wants to defend on a podcast. Huge kudos to @dwarkesh_sp for repeatedly asking exactly the correct next question and not losing the plot; I think almost any other interviewer would have failed.

quoting @dwarkesh_sp: I had a lot of fun chatting with @ShaneLegg - Founder & Chief AGI Scientist, Google DeepMind We discuss: - Why he expects AGI around 2028 - How to align superhuman models - What new architectures needed for AGI - Has Deepmind sped up capabilities or safety more? - Why https://t

@ESYudkowsky @dwarkesh_sp wow I thought that Shane read LW back in the day. would have thought he'd at least be able to address the basic points. he looks weirdly shmarmy here 🤔🤔 like something about his grin feels... condescending? wrong mood for this convo, idk.

@alex_with_ease yeah one way I think about Circling is that it's like... taking the mode of interaction as object rather than taking it for granted, which is vital in our current era of so many cultures smashing into each other with different assumptions
