1. What if Google Maps were good tho? 📍 instead of just a thing at the end for "rate these directions" you'd just be able to say (out loud ofc) > "yo google maps I needed to be in the right lane here & you didn't tell me til too late" Then it knows *where* the issue is.
2. What if smartphones were good tho? 📲 - a couple extra hardware buttons on the side that can be programmed to do all sorts of useful things - PROPER red-nighttime mode -

14. What if banks were good tho? For awhile I've dreamed of a room at a bank where they lock you in then bring out the quantity of cash equal to your balance, & you can actually hold it all in your hands (or scrooge mcduck in it) 🤑 Number-on-screen is literally hard to grasp!

@tristanharris @andy_matuschak 20. What if writing in cafés were good tho? I have a high-quality split keyboard (Kinesis Freestyle 2blue) that I love. The splitness makes it very portable (fits in some hoodie & jacket pockets). Typing on phone is way more focused than on computer!

32. What if housing were good tho? We need way more housing in most cities. Demand>supply is the only reason it costs as much as it does. More apts/condos with short-term guest spaces so that people can easily host friends/family without having extra rooms. Common space.

I resonate with this sense that having someone else give you a topic is good—they'll pick something you wouldn't have thought to, which will bring out a different side of you. But they have to know you.
Instead of having them all handed out by one person though like @vgr did the first year and @Conaw did a bit last year, I'm going to suggest people assign them to their friends. Go do that here:
Assignments *can* lead to writer's block—happened to me in 2019 where I had a lot of thoughts on culture but few on the more specific topic @vgr gave. (This turned out to be weird foreshadowing: 2020 involved me doing a deep-dive into precisely this👇😮)
I felt awkward and a little embarrassed about not finishing the thread, but I forgave myself: it's so so SO much better to write something at all than write nothing for fear of falling short. You can always go back and add more later, which I may do this year!
This is not to say the target doesn't matter. It does! Striving to do something you've never done before will stretch your limits and transform you, however long it takes 🎯

I've been asking this question "What if it were good tho?" and it's become a bit of a bit... ...and I keep noticing that while the tone of it is "it's bad; how could we make it actually good?" it reads ambiguously as also "have you considered that maybe it's already good?"
I'm really unclear to what extent this is a feature or a bug. Like, as long as I'm using this phrasing, I've kinda gotta treat it as a feature, since ambiguity is flirtatious and this is no exception. But do I want to move away from it longer term? We'll see, I guess! 🤸

in my ontology, "part of you is working against your self-interest" is in some sense nearly impossible, and any appearance of such is due to confusing a part for the self one part may be at cross-purposes with another part, but no part wants bad things on its own terms.
so if you shift identity from {part that's afraid it'll lose to the apparent saboteur}, up to the whole of your being including the parts of you you don't understand, then it becomes: - I want all of these wants to get cared for - my current strategies are mutually destructive
"mutually destructive" is different from "against my self interest" (above tweets edited from chats with a friend)
on the flipside though, some parts are Self-undermining, in the sense that they try to escape detection by jamming the radar of the larger selfing function. they need to undermine the overall self in order to operate with their current strategy.

Was reading an article where ⚫️ is capitalized and⚪️ is not. I've seen this before and it continues to feel weird to me. Gonna do a bit of research and think out loud a bit...
Okay, this piece makes the case that ⚪️ should also be capitalized, to avoid allowing it to fade into the background as default. In one sense this seems right, although I eschew reifying categories so this feels like the wrong direction. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/…
Someone once asked if me and another guy were brothers, and I said "no, but I can see why you would think so, we're both ⚪️ and have curly hair" and he was like "I'm Latino" & I was like "oh, huh!" To me he looked like he could be my brother. Maybe the reverse was not true? idk!
I met a ⚫️ woman in SF who asked if I had ⚫️ ancestry. She thought of "Malcolm" as a ⚫️ name, and thought I might have been named after Malcolm X... which seemed looked plausible given my curls & swarthy complexion, I guess. (my name comes from my Scottish heritage)
Anyway, heritage is a whole thing! I used to be very confused about the term "African American" until at 16 I realized it was a way of pointing at a particular fairly-unusual kind of heritage caused by slavery, where you don't know which country your ancestors actually came from.
This distinction between phenotype (the shape, color, appearance of your body) and ethnic heritage (where you're from, culturally) is vital. It can't be totally separated for tons of reasons, but failing to make it in the first place is a recipe for profound confusion.
So it seems to *me* this has something to do with why the word "Black" is coming into existence as a capitalized identity. It's like "Scottish". Thus no need for a capitalized "White" since there's no equivalent ethnic heritage group.
There is ofc a kind of ethnic experience that might be described as "mixed European", ie "my ancestors are from various places in Europe but I grew up in Canada/US & don't have any specific European-country cultural traditions." I'm close to this despite 90% Scottish ancestors.
Also, in this model, someone who grew up in Gambia, no matter where they live now, doesn't need that post-slavery descriptor either—they'd be "Gambian" or even something more specific like Mandinka or Fula or Wolof.
(Although ofc if they're living in the USA, their cultural experience of how other people interact with them is going to be affected by how others perceive them, which may involve an implicit assumption that they came to USA from slavery rather than a college scholarship)
Lines up with: > When people identify with specific terms of the African diaspora, we defer to those; in the absence of the identifiable ethnicities slavery stole from those it subjugated, Black can be a preferred ethnic designation for some descendants. cjr.org/analysis/capit…

All of this prompts me to think that MLK had the right idea around focusing on the content of people's character, not the color of their skin. I would add: and on what we can do together! Can we make music? Can we dance? Can we do science? Can we learn from each other?
Afaict, reifying race as category is getting in the way of people appreciating each other as people. Recognizing differences & similarities is helpful for making sense of our experiences, but category-first is stereotype-based thinking.

coercion = "the exploitation of the scarcity of another, to force the other to behave in a way that you want" (working draft, edited from some chats) (this is in the context of other-coercion; self-coercion needs a slightly different definition) 🧵
so if people have a scarcity of food, you can coerce them by feeding them conditional on them doing what you want (this is usually called slavery, and requires you physically prevent them from feeding themselves any other way!)
in general, a strategy built on the use of coercion means preferring that the coerced agent continue to be generally in a state of scarcity, because otherwise you would be unable to continue to control them!
most people in our societies have a scarcity of money, and many jobs involve taking advantage of people having such scarcities, in order to get them to do whatever the boss wants them to do (to the extent the boss can actually measure this)
...it's pretty clear to me, and I think to most people if they think about it, that this is pretty limited in how well it can motivate people to do anything remotely creative or hard to measure
this is to be contrasted with someone who is skilled, enjoys their work, & has lots of job opps—they're somewhat immune to exploitation since they can seek out self-directed work they'd do for fun, rather than suffering to serve another's will, just in order to eat
it's not just readily-quantifiable resources like 🍞💵🏡 people feel a scarcity of social well-being, love, respect, and interpersonal okayness more generally, so others can control their behavior by shaming them or withholding love until/unless the person does what they want.
again, use of such a coercive strategy requires that the person be in a chronic state of not-enoughness; otherwise you can't control them. this is incompatible with enlightenment & advanced stages of development, as far as I can tell, plus at odds with overall health & well-being
meanwhile, people can find other noncoercive motivations for wanting to do the sorts of things we sometimes think we need to coerce them into! some examples:
1. personally if I'm in a circle and someone points out that I'm doing something that's getting in the way of group coherence, then I want to untangle that for entirely selfish reasons: group flow is fucking ecstatic and wonderful and I want to experience it as much as possible
2. if someone I'm living with wants me to be quiet at night so they can sleep, then even though I love loud music and staying up late, I'm inclined to find a way to satisfy them (while also satisfying myself as much as possible)
2cont. ...then I'm inclined to find a way to satisfy their need because: - I want them to be happy - I want them to enjoy living with me - my life is better to the extent that the people living with me are happy overall and glad to be living with me
AND to the extent my motivation is oriented *towards* group flow or happier partner (not just *avoiding* shame) ... I'll be creatively attempting to find win-wins, rather than: - goodharting - virtue signalling - trying to avoid getting caught doing the thing people don't like
this is why noncoercive motivation completely outclasses coercive motivation: - it doesn't goodhart or incentivize hiding - it doesn't require sustaining states of scarcity
suppose that one of us proposes that you cook us both dinner but I buy the ingredients is this coercive? depends! it's definitely not inherently coercive if both of us have enough food/money, though there could be some sort of guilt-based or status-based something
suppose that you're completely broke though. then is it necessarily coercive? maybe. but let's unpack it!
even in that situation, if I'm like "you're my friend... I really want you to be able to eat... hmm... I don't have time to make food, so I'm currently spending money on eating out, but I could save that money and thus afford more groceries, if you can prepare it"
then in that scenario there's a sense in which I'm strategizing to find a way to solve your problem that might work for you huge difference also between whether you'd be happy to cook (you just can't afford the groceries) vs would find it onerous I'm looking for a win-win!
whereas if I'm like "hmm I definitely want a chef, hey who's someone who's desperate enough that I can get them to cook for both of us?" then that's... not so good? but even there it's pretty subtle, and there's also nothing wrong with wanting to solve your own problems!
in the coercive world, I *prefer* for the person to stay in a state of desperation, so I can keep exploiting them 😈 whereas in the collaborative/creative world, I prefer for them to create a state of abundance, from which I expect us to be able to find *even better win-wins* 🤩
to the extent that a given culture isn't skilled at finding win-wins, people will naturally tend to feel threatened by others' abundance, because it increases the possibility that they may end up being coerced
I broadly think that an overall attitude of attempting to find win-wins (vs attempting to control others' behavior using whatever hooks of scarcity you can find) is possible even in the context of substantial scarcity, as long as you're not literally competing for food to live on
I'm not certain of this—it's one of my big open questions at the moment, and there's lots of evidence that it requires substantial amounts of abundance in order to learn noncoercion in the first place, because if you have to keep working shitty jobs to eat it's hard to unlearn it
but this might be in part just because throughout the history of civilization (perhaps less-so beforehand, it's hard to say) there haven't been many noncoercive deals available and this is changing, due to new possibilities in feral free agency, 1000 true fans, &+
this is the connection I'm seeing between feral free agents and self-energizing motivation
the primary actually-rivalrous resource is usable energy, whether fuel or food everything else is somewhat less rivalrous: we can share it or use it together in a way that adds up to more than 2 halves but you can't spend energy twice! we can't each eat the same apple! 🍎

at nerd meetup recently, someone confused two asian guys she'd met earlier the guys didn't seem bothered at all but she still seemed embarrassed a minute later, so I checked in, & she was like "😳 yeah I feel bad" then one of the guys was like "no worries! asians look alike 😀"
and everyone got into a great discussion about whether there was actually more variance in looks among people from different regions! ...iirc someone said that ML algos optimized to distinguish Han Chinese folks could recognize Europeans, but not vice versa! 😮
and the whole conversation just became a delightful nerdy conversation about related topics, completely removing any sense that anybody had done anything wrong! implied: it's safe to talk about this ❤️ it's not taboo/wrong/doom... mistakes are okay
I felt (and feel) really proud of having stepped in there. I feel like I'm learning how to use my capacity to be loud & interruptive in social scenes for good I am fiercely protective of people being safe to make mistakes without shame ❤️🔥
The fact that my just bringing attention to it was able to dissolve the embarrassment was a function of the social group I was in; it was a bunch of grey tribe nerds. If it had been a social justicey scene, people might've actually shamed her (as she implicitly feared).
Fwiw, as far as I can tell, shaming people for stuff like this is uhhh not gonna help make people more comfortable and curious around people with different ethnicities... fear is not a good state for learning.
Being upset at some experience of feeling mistreated is understandable, and I would want to welcome it in general. But that's completely separate from whether expressing your upset actually creates a useful feedback loop that gets you what you want. True in rships & society.
We are constantly creating the microcultures we're in with how we treat each other. Norms & meta-norms aren't arbitrary but neither are they permanently fixed. We co-create them in every moment.

have started exploring Land Value Tax and it's striking me with its obviousness different from property tax! it's a higher tax, but only on the value of the land itself, not additions so it makes it unprofitable to speculate and way less profitable to landlord
when the rich buy goods or services this increases the amount of capital available for making those Tesla could never have gotten to making sedans without first selling roadsters to rich people when the rich buy land ........this gives money to whoever owned it before 🤷♀️
when the rich invest money in entrepreneurship (via angel/VC or indirectly/acausally via the stock market), that obviously makes it more possible for people to try creating new companies
even when the rich invest in commodities, this still benefits people (I read something once that depicted someone opening up a magical window to a developing country through which they traded corn, & buy-low sell-high meant they were usefully moving it to a scarcer future)
when the rich buy land ........this gives money to whoever owned it before 🤷♀️ nothing is accomplished by this! no brighter future is being created it merely incentivizes speculation... *on something everyone needs to live*

I'd say that kids generate internal blocks when they receive messages that it's not okay to want what they want
there's a great quote from Bessel van der Kolk about healing from trauma being about learning that it's okay to feel what you feel and know what you know, and I have an addition about wanting
the addition needs a caveat of course, like any pithy true sentence one could either put the caveat on the level of action (it's okay to have a violent urge but not okay to act on it) or on the level of underlying need vs strategy (ok to want power but not by killing)
but at any rate, suppose you're a kid, and you want something, and your parents can't deal with how you're going about wanting it (and or trying to get it) for any of a dozen reasons so you get some "no" signal, whether a *look*, or a stern word, or no dessert, or a cane...
and you don't want to get more of that no signal, so you (usually unconsciously) vow not to go about wanting that thing again
these build up this is how people learn awayness-based motivation the fear is louder than their wants but it can never tell you where to go, only where not to
too many things to avoid, and everywhere is problematic, meaning you either bounce around frantically (anxiety) or become completely stuck (depression)

@favoredprisoner @Meaningness @nosilverv As someone who used to be a yudkowskian rationalist and recognized mine and friends' systematic errors when I read @Meaningness's writing, it seems to me there's indeed a meta-rationality shaped blindspot among many rationalists (both bayesian and popperian critical rationalists)
One implication: for all of us who'd been assuming that something like Glasnost and the mutual disarmament negotiations were achieved *without* such a psychotechnology, thus that similar results could be in future... we no longer have such an existence proof 😅
This is both good news and bad news. Bad news because it implies that it might take more oomph to achieve similar peace elsewhere than we might have assumed. Good news because that oomph is increasingly available and could be made even more available, in service of what we want.
I'm pretty sure there's also a role for meditators and trust-dance instructors in all of this, too, and it'll be interesting to see how the different layers interface.

fwiw, I think it's important to be respectful that people have had the experiences they've had
it's just that it's really hard to generalize usefully about those experiences, and it's important not to try to use logic and reasoning *on* your intuitions—they're not built for that
I really like @QiaochuYuan's thread (linked above) and it reminds me of some thoughts I had while reading @Meaningness's "No cosmic meaning" article recently. It has a section "Astrology is rational", which gave me more appreciation for astrology than I'd ever felt before!
Tracking the patterns of the constellations in the night sky was a vital way for ancient humans to know exactly when to go where in order to have successful hunts! 🤯 > Nothing observable during daytime can tell you [when to migrate, within an error margin of only a few days].
However! To @QiaochuYuan's point, I'm pretty sure most people doing astrology these days are mostly NOT looking at the stars! They're not having direct perceptions of anything but decontextualized charts and tables.
If you want charts that will tell you about the world, we have better ones now! Wanna know the weather? We have charts for that. Wanna describe someone's personality? Charts for that too (you might uhh try perceiving them before you assign them a type 😬)

I guess I really hate being misunderstood. It's fine if someone makes a guess about me as long as they're open to learning, rather than doubling down. ...and I've *personally* found use of astrology strongly correlated with people doubling down.
Maybe that's partially a function of my historical defensiveness to it? Probably part of it. I've tended to be pretty aggressive about telling people to fuck off when they astrologize me, which would tend to prompt anyone to grasp for "no, my experience has legitimacy" ...legit!
If I say "what's your enneagram type?" then I'm gonna model someone very differently if they say "I'm a classic 5" vs if they say "I think it came out as a 5? but it didn't particularly resonate". Just because I resonate so strongly with 7w8, doesn't mean the model fits everyone
But some people use the enneagram as a way to look at their model & not at the person in front of them in all their vibrant complexity. So maybe some people use astrological models in similarly spacious ways? still sus to me, since the core data (eg a birthday) is 100% fixed.
Like it seems the best you could do is say "welp, I guess you're not really much of a Cancer, so I won't think of you as one" but then you're left blank. (Compared to trying on other enneatypes or other frameworks altogether)
Maaaybe people go back and reinterpret the various ascensions in terms of new info? Still seems like wrong direction to me! Looking away from person rather than at them. Best case I can make is creating space for intuition to fill in gaps... something something hemispheres
It's been meaningful to me to come to appreciate ways in which most woo things have merit even if their models don't compile. Energy healing: pay attention to subtle sensations in your or others' bodies. Homeopathy: deep holistic listening (kinda) both: intending to heal helps
I'm still at a loss re astrology. Maybe I still feel too hurt (/misunderstood) by it to forgive it and be curious.

I'm watching Don't Look Up and it's such a great example of people urgently wasting time.
Also very striking in terms of the particular nature of astronomy as a solved clockwork science, in which it would make sense to have extremely confident predictions of default events 6 months in the future, which doesn't hold for almost any other kind of disaster.

"Jesus was a systems thinker" Got this phrase from a mentor/colleague, not sure if she coined it (it has like 2 meh google results). I don't recall her explaining what it meant, but here's what I've pieced together so far.
Many of Jesus' moves were about changing system dynamics. "turn the other cheek" as a micro example of deescalating an unwanted positive feedback loop that cool thing he did where the bread & fish multiplied—probably a *good* positive feedback loop there
His grand finale was an attempt to shortcircuit the scapegoating system. Brilliant idea, okay execution. It maybe half-worked, which was a bit of a mess. I have a lot of background reading to do (Girard, for starters) to learn to articulate this.
